CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System is urging parents to stay alert after a recent measles outbreak in West Texas. Dr. Lauren Robinson, the hospital’s chief medical officer, says the virus is spreading quickly due to unvaccinated individuals and the highly contagious nature of measles.

According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, an unvaccinated adult was recently treated for measles at a Longview hospital. Since January, the state has confirmed 597 cases, and officials warn more may be reported.

Dr. Robinson advises parents to watch for symptoms like cough, fever, congestion, and rash. She recommends taking children with these symptoms to the emergency room for evaluation. She also encourages the public to check the state health department’s website for updates on where cases have been reported.
