Texarkana Water Utilities will temporarily change how it disinfects drinking water starting today, for about four weeks as part of routine maintenance.

The system will switch from chloramine to free chlorine, a move officials say is safe and commonly used to help clean water lines and maintain quality. Residents may notice a slight chlorine smell, minor discoloration, and increased fire hydrant flushing during the process.

Officials say these changes are temporary and do not affect water safety. Dialysis patients and aquarium owners are encouraged to check with their suppliers for any needed adjustments.

TWU says it will monitor water quality daily throughout the process.
