According to police, the messages claim to be a “Notice of Default” and are designed to look like official court documents. They often include seals, a judge’s name, a case number, and even a signature to appear legitimate.
However, authorities say the messages are fake. Scammers are sending similar texts nationwide, simply changing the court name and appearance to make them seem local.
Police say there are several red flags to watch for. Courts do not send legal notices by text message, and they will never ask recipients to scan a QR code to make payments or resolve a case. The messages also tend to create urgency, often claiming a court date is imminent.
Residents are advised not to scan any QR codes or call phone numbers included in the message. Instead, they should contact the court directly using verified, official information if they have concerns.
