Arkansas Reviewing Future of Texarkana Correctional Facilities

Arkansas officials are reviewing the future of correctional facilities in Texarkana, including the possibility of closing or relocating some operations.

According to a state memo reported by the Arkansas Democrat, the Southwest Arkansas facility has numerous structural problems. Officials are being asked to determine whether continued repairs are financially responsible or if relocating operations would be a better option.

The memo also suggests considering closure of the 128-bed Texarkana Regional Correctional Center and moving its inmates elsewhere.

One possible option would involve donated land near Hope for a new facility similar in size to the current Texarkana operation. However, no final decision has been made on closing the Texarkana facilities or building a new one.
