The National Association of Letter Carriers will hold its annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive this Saturday, May 10. In preparation, community members gathered today at the North Robison Road Post Office in Texarkana to show their support for local letter carriers and their efforts to fight hunger.
On the second Saturday in May each year, letter carriers across the country collect non-perishable food donations along their routes. In Texarkana, the collected food will go to Harvest Regional Food Bank and be distributed to local pantries serving families in Miller and Bowie counties.
Camille Wrinkle, CEO of Harvest Regional Food Bank, says the food drive comes at a critical time. “With food prices high, many families are struggling, especially those with children who may lose access to school meals during the summer.” She urges residents to fill the yellow donation bags delivered this week.
Since it began 33 years ago, the national food drive has collected more than 1.9 billion pounds of food. Organizers say donations are especially important now, as food banks often see shortages in the spring following the holiday season
